da da doo doooooo!! yeah!

we picked up the new car today. i am allowed to put one kitty sticker on it. i better choose wisely. i said that i was making a steering wheel cover so as not to burn my paws and he said, ok. i said i need a seat belt cover thing cause it chokes me. again. ok. but i can’t have junk in the car. i don’t think my vehicle is so dirty, but i will get an organizer and leave it at that. a little junk makes it feel homey though.
anyway, work was super dead, as it normally is at the end of the month and gabe and i talked about ideas for some of the projects he wants to do, like cards and other things, that just need a little polish. (like shine, not the nationality). strangely, some of these things never even cross his mind. like buying prefolded cards and envelopes, or whatever and then embelishing. signing the prints. stuff like that. also, i have him interested in blogging his paintings and drawings. i think he has this perception of all this hipsters that are pretentious for no reason, and i have told him about the amazing community of creative people out there that have inspired me so much. i was jaded, too, and i am amazed at the ideas, praise and inspiration that i have gotten from all of you. i hope i am good at communicating this to you. anyway, it has been really nice to work on ideas with gabe, like these boxes, to get input from someone whose opinion matters, or rather that has artistic insight. most people i can ask don’t know anything about color or design, or are not able to visualize things. no biggie. anyway, we are going to start a notebook of ideas and do a set number a week. see how it works out. inspired of course by a month of softies, drawings, etc. what will the new one be? i cannot wait. anyway, that was really all.
i tried to start butter’s hat out of cotton and it was way too soft, no stretch. duh. no one at the knitting store thought of it either. so i did about a third of it twice with two different yarns, a berrocco cotton poly nexy, which would fit the big boy. i quit. i don’t want to work on anything square and same stitch over and over. ack. so i started LELAH. or the first version, anyway. i don’t know how accurate my stitches are, you really have to pay attention! but the lace looks pretty so far. i am only 5 rows in. it takes forever to do a row. but it is fun fun fun. especially after doing those boring scarves. so i am using not too expensive yarn, see how it goes and then do nicer yarn. i have 1 ball short of 3 different color bliss allweather cotton, or whatever it is called. and it was last of a batch sale yarn, so hopefully they wills till have it. or i can do something different. dunno. ideas? i have a gazillion pics to post.
the ginger-haired kitten romeo who shows up whenever we come home was outside and i snuggled with him, wanting to cry when i put him down and came inside. my husband says our cats do not allow another and neither does he. this boy is so very sweet. he loves me. i am sure of it. sigh. it is a weakness. i need to at least get him fixed. that i can do.
we went to dinner with heather. she has been having a rough time. we are going to wool and sheep festival, late friday returning late saturday. we have never had a trip together even though we are best friends…so this should be fun. it is also the first trip that mazzzda takes. what should she/he be named. so, anyone wants to hook up friday for dinner, or whatever, we are staying at the hilton there. or if you need to be bailed out of jail for trying to steal a lamb… email me and i will shoot my number to ya…i wish my boo could come. so sad. i will get ya a little something though. a sheep? oh, i can’t, they can’t handle the weather. i’ll think of something.
the ladies from knitwits offered to take me to the festival with them, but i can drive myself, it would be an inconvenience for them. they are fantastic.
um. what else? knitwits asked me to participate in a trunkshow they are doing of their customers’ work, so i need to make something totally insane. i want to give them one of the framed knittings when they are finished. i think they would dig them. ok, that is about all.

Thinking About Craft

By Martha Wasacz on thinking

Craftsmanshipcrop

Let’s say for the sake of argument craft is the plain girl who developed her personality, whereas art is the willowy blonde who has always been popular. Put another way, I’d rather hang out with Chris Cooper, than Ben Affleck at the party.

The comparison could be a topic a lot of us avoid. Largely because there is an implied sense that art is superior to craft, a belief I never shared. I do not mean to malign the artist here (love them, and often aspire to be one). But many of us grew up with the myth of the “artistic talent”. Something you are born with, either have or do not have.

What appeals to me about craft is that element of self determination. You decide what you want to master, and then take the necessary steps to get there. The crafts-person model was more in sync with my life’s experience. A craftsman arrived at his goal through hard work and applied effort. This is my preferred way of looking at life. (And I know artists work very hard, these are the broad strokes.)

Of course the contest between craft and art is artificial, we are free to define ourselves and what we create in in any way we choose. I did struggle with how to define myself for a while. Until I decided to let it go. For me, it is about the making of something. I am no longer concerned with convincing the world it is “art”. And I am definitely not interested in deciding which is superior, only in considering what makes each expression unique to its category. And there are some are some measurable differences.

Nine points to consider in the debate over what separates art from craft.

1. Art is about the audience, craft is about its maker.

2. Craft knows what it is going to be before it is made.

3. Craft employs the work of other craftsmen, one craft supplies another with tools or materials. Craft then transforms the raw material into something different.

4. Art strives to be original, craft relies on tradition. Craft often has similar features interpreted differently. For example Month of Softies monsters, Clapotis scarves, or artisan-made tables.

5. Art needs no utility (other than to get an emotion from the viewer). Craft tends to have a function (but often also elicits emotion, in my opinion).

6. Is art often serious, craft often fun?

7. Does art strive to produce a certain state of mind, whereas craft strives to satisfy a human demand?

8. Craft can be repeated, by the original crafter as well as other similarly skilled individuals. Art may not be “repeatable”

9. Can there be a “fine craft” category that bridges the two categories, or are we just hedging our bets?

There are exceptions to each of these and my intention is not to provide a definitive list, only to  provide some food for thought.

Oh, and I finished my echarpe!

anyway, gabe and i spent much of the day brainstorming. i am trying to get the shadow boxes going, got some more of them, i got a little dressform that i am going to wrap in yarn, i have some really cute ideas. i brought a shadow box in to dv8 and terrie seemed underwhelmed, but said that they would like to have some. i think they are really pretty.
anyway, i did two more scarves today, i will photo all 4 and post them. i forgot today. the day was a little crazy.
jake was in a bad mood and has been really on edge lately, and i don’t deal well with it. the full moon doesn’t help. even kahlo growled at me today. i try to just keep to myself.
i am bringing all sorts of craft stuff in to-morrow to try to get some boxes, etc done. i think gabe was excited too.
hot clue here i come.
we pick up the car saturday, and that is really all. i should probably read a book and not knit anymore tonite. i did two scarves. one still needs the fringe, but that only takes half an hour or so. i mix a million different things.

otherwise, i have all these projects that i want to start, especially getting the shadow boxes done, i found a long narrow one yesterday at jo-jo’s that is really pretty. also i have some ideas for making small dressforms wrapped in yarn, maybe big ones. i had to make them out of wicker when i apprenticed with adrienne, so i know how, but it would look gorgeous, and if i am doing a fiber show it would be pretty. also, to display scarves, it would look really great. hm. they have little ones at jojos just decorative, i will look around. they would be good gifts. i could build an armature and cover it in decoupage and then wrap it in yarn. that would work. and i could make the armature out of whatever, if it looked cool enough i could leave it as is. anyway, i need to pick some yarns to take to work to make some scarves. i will take photos of what i did yesterday and post em. that is all. knit on…

just a quickie. i made 2 scarves for for the boutique today, really pretty. i ran out of one of the 3 yarns i was knitting the one with, this moda dea “prima” stuff, which is just that, from joann’s that is really awesome. it is an eyelash and fuzzy yarn base, but it is somewhat sparse and really long and soft. it looks great with handspun yarns. unfortunately a small ball of it is $9, but i guess i get reimbursed for it anyway. so i got that and some beads for the scarves and a rotary cutter and board for cutting cloth to knit with, which i had a 50% off coupon, which rocked cause it was normally 50 bucks. oh and also another shadow box. came to more than 100 bucks, so that made me feel sick, but i blend this yarn into lots of things. i hate most other eyelash yarns, they feel cheap and polyestery. i am looking into ironstone’s as well, the eyelash mixed into pizzazz is gorgeous. like fraggle fur.
no “lost” again. load of crap.
my foot really hurts. and i am still really tired. the day went by so fast.
pavel accidentally scratched jake pretty good and he screamed so loud that i felt nauseous afterwards. you know that feeling?
we pick up the new car on saturday. jake has been really stressed out and grumpy. i feel bad that he has to deal with everything.
anyway, is anyone having problems with my blog loading? please email me if you can’t get comments to post, or the site to load at all, and i may switch to a different server.
on to the next scarf.

new car

so yesterday we went to look at cars, this is the car we picked out…amy has the protege which is the same car before they changed the name. hers is the 5door though. which is station wagony, it is even bigger than this one, and smaller is better when i am driving it.
i am so so tired. man. i want to reschedule my appts and stay home. i really think i might. man!! tired!! i didn’t get anything but coffee because i wanted to get back into bed.
my one foot has been really hurting me, to the point that i can’t put my weight on it and can’t wear heels. not cool. it feels better today. you don’t really think about your feet, and it can be a really big deal it they malfunction. really big.
i only knitted like 2 rows yesterday, and it is the stupid breast cancer scarf. i want her to let me do them a little more exciting, so people will wear them and buy them. who knows. i may work on something else, although i could just get one done today for her to see and leave it at that.
i unpacked the rest of the yarn yesterday, jake went to knitwits to pick it up. he said that going to the yarn store for your wife is no biggie, also, the ladies there love him, he is so adorable. i am sure a hot man holding a bag full of yarn is sexy to them too. he also said that buying tampons is no biggie. i asked him if picking up herpes medicine would be. he said no. unless i actually had herpes. oops.
did i say i was exhausted? lupus be damned!! lupus responds,”at least your liver works” i respond, “point taken.”
more later. i will post my yarn on flickr.

pretty good day…no kind of bad

well it started off that the insurance co. called and told me that the car was totalled. and not worth all that much. as opposed to 100 buck deductible. so jake is oh so stressed about everything. i think it will be ok, he just needs some time to calm down. it sucks. i wish i was rich.
so then, i went to knitwits to meet everyone, pudge got there at 12:28 for a 12:30 appt. i was freaking out. the old guy who runs a tile place across the road yelled “they aren’t open on mondays!” i have an appt!! oh, ok. so i waited in the car. janie from jm’s showed up 12:40 or so, at which point i was sure that she wasn’t coming. let’s just say that $400 of yarn and 2 hours later, we were cashing out, packing up and settling up. the scarf in this photo, which i put fringe all over, made from 4 different yarns, janey wanted there and then and bought it from me. i kinda wanted to keep it. she freaked over it. fortunately, while waiting for everyone to arrive in my car, i took photos. anyway, the stash is crazy, i will photo it after i have picked up the things that needed to be wound. i then went to michael’s because there were a few other things i was looking for. the fringe is homespun with the thread that holds it together pulled out. it looks like fleece. everyone asks me where it is from. i also think i ma cut up some fabric for embellishing, as well. i have enough floating around. anyway, it was fun, and i think i have pretty free run of things, just within some color schemes, although, the one i sold was crazy and she loved it.
god, i am tired, so more later.

here he is.
it snowed all day yesterday. jake was really anxious about driving to work. i called him at 4 i think to check on him and he was all stressed.
i had all these crazy nightmares about jess stalking me. and amy, i don’t think i told you the latest gossip, remind me to tell you if i didn’t. also talib was having some kind of nervous breakdown in my dream. and howard stern was in it too. i have these horror movie nightmares every night.
yesterday jake and i organized the bathroom, i had gotten all of these different sized plastic containers. i will take some photos, it looks really good. also, i hung all of my watches and necklaces on nails, i don’t have a jewelry box. it looks nice.
i am going to ask the massage guy if jake could get one, too. he really needs it. when i got in the fight with him, he actually yelled at me, which is a really rare occurance. like 2 times in 5 years, actually that may be it in the 10+ years i have known him. i got ready to be mad, but he has had a rough week. everything isn’t always about me. no, it is.
also, i need to figure out how to put together a really big shadow box, like 18″ wide by 4-6 feet long. if i just found a box, i could get glass cute, but how would it go together without being really ugly? any ideas? hm.
i think i will take photos at knitwits today, and i need to bring in the crazy scarf i made. it is gorgeous. i think jm’s will want some like that, although they won’t be as cheap for labor, putting the fringe all over the place is not the quickest thing in the world. my mom’s scarf is about half done and then i think i will put beaded fringe on the ends. i think. actually i may have some store bought beaded fringe that would match. ok, gotta get up. photos later.

anyway, this thing in the photo is a paper bead, made basically with a chopstick, paper and glue and whatever else you want. pretty crazy stuff. paper. serious.
anyway, i messed around with the sewing machine some more, i got it threaded, etc and after a few stitches it won’t go anymore and the thread is all tangled. heather said it is probably the tension. i will mess with it to-morrow if i have time. it looks so cool, though.
i finished another breast cancer scarf, i put fringies all over the place, it resembles the lion scarf i did a while ago. i am thinking each link, and how i should enclose it, and then typing on. anyway, i will post a photo to-morrow. i have the meeting at knitwits, i am told the the boutique people are coming, they still never called me, so i will keep my fingers crossed. i don’t feel good about it. anyway, i also started a mother’s day scarf for my ma-ma, using a really loose lace stitch and swanky classic elit dune. yeah!! i wanted to make a wrap and she didn’t seem interested. so scarf. it sparkles!
i also messed around withe shadown boxes which should work nicely. i am wondering if ikea may have better ones. the ones from michael’s are really cheapy on the back. so i may paint or paper a piece of wood or heavy cardstock to use. i am also thinking of using a ribbon attached to the top instead of a hanger on the back. or maybe something else instead of ribbon. hm. yarn maybe. appropo. right? it will be cute though.
i have had 4 big cups of coffee so far today, 2 reg 2 decaf, and i want another even though it is 11:25p. i want one. i will have one.
heather called and said that she would come with to see the sheep, and asked if we could come home sat night. after driving all day seeing the thing and then back again. i am afraid i will end up not going. i get so scared that i will feel sick and be 4 hours away. not that that is so far. it isn’t rational, but i hate it. scary. it overwhelms excitement as the event, whatever it is, nears. i dunno. also, the month of softees thing, i am not sure how to put the photo up on the blog for the link. anyone? anyone?
ok, well wish me luck for to-morrow’s yarn buy. keep ya posted. now for coffee.
